Controversy
MGE Shut-down
In April 2009, head administrator Phoebus announced that come June 1, 2009, the hosting plan for all of the sites in the Mindless Games and Entertainment would be let go and sub sequentially all of the sites would be shut down. Many of the community were displeased, but most felt that it was a long time coming. However, after some goading, Mull decided to keep the NewDoom site and forums online, as well as the Raven-Games.com forums online; both of which were instead moved to a new server on June 1st, 2009 instead of shutting down. The community rejoiced!
On the other hand, all of the previously hosted sites (including Doom Legacy and Doomsday) would not be included in the move and are no longer hosted.
Payment Plan
The night of June 8th, 2009, the NewDoom forums went down for several hours; the board displayed a message stating that an upgrade was being installed. Once the forums went back online, however, many users were shocked to discover that they now had to pay to use most of the board's features, including simply the act of posting. This meant that all users from that point and previously, regardless of how long they had been a regular member of NewDoom, now had to pay to use any of the features they had been using for free for almost ten years.
Payment options currently include:
- $2.50 for one (1) month of full access, or
- $18.95 for one (1) year of full access
Despite the addition of a few new features of the forums (including built in blogs), the opinions of most were made apparent almost immediately. Announcements were made at Doomworld[1] and on The Abyss[2]. Many nasty private messages were undoubtedly launched in Phoebus's direction, in addition to all of the comments logged by unhappy NewDoomers in each of said threads.
Not too long afterward an additional announcement was made to inform that all unpaid (and unbanned) members could now post, but were only allowed five posts a day. Most users who had already moved elsewhere expressed being underwhelmed by the new announcement and still had no desire to return.
General consensus is that NewDoom will not last much longer, considering that only one person has paid for the full membership, and most former members do not wish to return.
